Patient’s role

Key points

◆ The long-term outcome is better for the patients whose disease gets diagnosed at an early stage and are managed by rheumatologists.

◆ Every newly diagnosed patient should be educated about the disease they have, and how to treat it. Depression and anxiety are not uncommon among patients, and these are treatable diseases that have many underlying causes. Some individuals are genetically prone to depression.

◆ Beyond prescribed medicine, there is an aspect called self-management that aims to provide the patient and their families with the support they need in order to achieve and maintain physical independence.

◆ You should feel free to discuss any issues related not only to your job and employment but also your personal life (such as sexual life, self-image, marriage, reproductive health, fertility, and pregnancy).

◆ It is important for you to tell your healthcare providers about any herbs, “over-the counter” medicines (not needing any prescriptions), megavitamins, prebiotics, probiotics, and any potentially addictive substances that you may be using.

◆ Co-management of your disease involves working with your rheumatologist, primary care physician, and appropriate specialists for any associated manifestations (such as uveitis, IBD, and psoriasis) or comorbid conditions (such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes).
